Nazaré

Striking 26.21 meters (86 feet) high was the wave with which Sebastian Steudtner set a new Guinness World Record in 2020. It was the highest wave ever ridden by a surfer off Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal. The bay is known for its perfect water conditions and unique scenery. Several videos are circulating on the internet showing the violence of the meter-high waves. This is paradise to professional surfers...

Peniche

Small pointbreak waves or heavy punchy breakballs - when it comes to surfing, Peniche is definitely considered Portugal's most popular and versatile hotspot. Thanks to its offshore coastal position, the teardrop-shaped fishing town north of Lisbon almost has all-round contact with the sea, which shows its majestic power here. Gigantic waves are the result. No wonder the region, especially Praia dos Supertubos, is so popular among surfers.

Ericeira

A bit more south than Nazaré and Peniche and about 45 minutes by car from the center of Lisbon, lies the fishing village of Ericeira. Surfers appreciate the region because of the many different surf spots and breathtaking beaches with super high waves. Not only professionals are welcome here, but also junior surfers will find perfect spots with more harmless waves to get on the board and hone their skills.

Lisbon

If you like surfing in front of a crowd and want the hustle and bustle just around the corner, Praia de Carcavelos is the place for you. The popular beach belongs to the Portuguese capital Lisbon and is only about 25 minutes away from the city center. Here you can train on moderate waves before enjoying city life. A great way to combine both worlds.

Sagres

Surfers from all over the world are drawn not only to the north of Portugal, but also to the southwestern tip of the country, where conditions are perfect for riding consistently moderate waves. Here, too, you can enjoy the sheer endless choice of beaches in all directions and plenty of space to practice. And if you've had enough of surfing, there are plenty of other water sports to choose from.
