These Stylish Hotels Are Worth a Trip in 2023

From Berlin to South Tyrol to Malaysia, Design Hotels™ welcomes six new members to its portfolio of exceptional hotels.

December 27, 2022

A hotel has to be outstandingly special to be included in the carefully curated portfolio of Design Hotels™. More than 300 independent properties now belong to the brand, which was founded in 1993. As diverse as they are, they are united by their commitment to individuality, design and personal service. Recently, they added six new Design Hotels™ to the collection.

Hotel Windsor, Italy

Located directly on the coast in Laigueglia, the hotel is a luxurious retreat. It scores with its modern aesthetics and refined elegance. After being abandoned for twenty years, new life is now moving into the walls of the listed monument. Guests can look forward to spacious layouts, beautiful views of the Ligurian Sea, an on-site sandy beach, and a restaurant. The 25 rooms and public areas feature Italian design, custom furniture and sculptures. But the immediate surroundings are also worth seeing. For Laigueglia is officially one of the most beautiful places in Italy.

Hotel Schwarzschmied, Italy

Also in Italy, but in South Tyrol, is the Hotel Schwarzschmied, the second of the recently added Design Hotels™. It is characterized by its focus on wellness. The hotel, which was built in 1981, offers a spa, yoga and meditation classes. The property was only recently entirely renovated. Regional larch and spruce wood, Vinschgau marble and Sarntal porphyry tiles characterize the design. Feeling at ease is no hard task here. Indeed, the public areas feel like large living rooms. Custom-made lamps by Harry Thaler and hand-woven sheep's wool carpets do the rest. Other features include a 29-meter outdoor pool, an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, and even its own vineyard.

FREIgeist Göttingen Nordstadt, Germany

Frei Geist

The new hotel is a meeting place for locals and visitors alike. © Design Hotels™

But not only Italy can boast new Design Hotels™. Germany also welcomed two new members. One of them is FREIgeist Göttingen in the newly developed Sartorius district. It combines Mediterranean warmth with industrial purism. Black lattice windows, steel accents, tables that were once workbenches and corrugated metal serve as reference to the former factory site. Turkish kilim carpets and a warm color palette provide a pleasant contrast. Levantine and Neapolitan classics are on the menu at the in-house restaurant East of Italy. Souvenirs of the culinary kind can be purchased in the in-house delicatessen store. And for alcoholic beverages, we recommend the FREIgeist Skybar with its signature drinks and panoramic views.

Hotel Wilmina, Germany

Lots of light and warm colors transform the hotel's past. © Design Hotels™

In Berlin, the renowned architectural firm Grüntuch Ernst Architects redesigned a former women's prison. They turned the 120-year-old building into a haven in the middle of the pulsating heart of West Berlin. Situated in a quiet courtyard, its details still recall the property's past. Original furnishings have been retained. Cell doors, railings and staircases from that time are still preserved. 44 different rooms, gardens and lush plant installations await guests. And high-quality materials, soft textures as well as bright colors, provide a homely ambience.

House Hotel Old Tbilisi, Georgia

Design Hotels

An oasis of calm in the midst of the bustling city. © Design Hotels™

The capital of Georgia is characterized by its Eurasian heritage. This is also reflected in the House Hotel Old Tbilisi. For example, in the custom-made furniture made of recycled wood. They combine Asian and European styles. The city's heritage is also expressed in hand-painted portraits of Georgian personalities. Made by local artist Musya Qeburia, they give the hotel plenty of local color. And modernity enters the landmarked building thanks to shades of red, orange and gray. Beautifully restored wooden balconies, inviting terraces and an original fireplace in the basement complete the house.

The Luma Hotel, Malaysia

There are also new Design Hotels™ outside Europe. The most noteworthy is The Luma Hotel in Kota Kinabalu. And it scores with numerous hip elements. For example, changing exhibitions of local art are held here. In addition, playlists curated by local musicians are played. The coffee comes from the neighborhood roastery. And the creative vibe of the city lingers over everything. In regards to culinary, guests can look forward to modern Asian cuisine and creative cocktails, a Chinese hotspot restaurant, and another restaurant serving traditional Japanese cuisine. Japanese-inspired elements also predominate in the rooms. Such as clean lines and light oak floors. The result? An urban oasis of calm. And it is dedicated to green luxury.
