Location

If your first association with Rhodes is masses of sunburned tourists, we can assuage your worries: the Gennadi, which opened in 2018, is located in the south of the island, far away from the usual crowds. Although the drive there takes about an hour and a half, the trip is worth it: It's always a few degrees warmer here than in the north, the area is still very exclusive, and yet not too far away for cultural aficionados who want to visit dreamy lindos or Rhodes Town, which is steeped in history. The resort itself is nestled in the slopes of the typically barren Greek landscape, directly on the Vlycha Bay which is easy to reach: just a few steps from your room, you'll find yourself right in front of the deep blue of the Aegean Sea.

Ambience

Gennadi Grand Resort

The hotel's design is minimal and elegantly understated. Nevertheless, you'll find plenty of cozy corners to make yourself at home. © Gennadi Grand Resort

The Gennadi is a resort for lovers of minimal design: high ceilings and open spaces, untreated wood and lots of glass create light-flooded rooms at pleasant temperatures and equipped with numerous lounge areas. As elegant as the resort is, the Gennadi is just as much a family hotel as it is appeals to couples, singles and groups of friends.

Accordingly, the group of guests is very diverse; at most, you might notice fellow vacationers at the pool or at the restaurant during the breakfast rush – other than that, the guests spread out across the spacious area, leaving plenty of room for everyone.

Good to know:

The Gennadi emphasizes sustainability: pitched roofs are designed to minimize the reflection of the sun, wastewater is recycled to water the gardens, and water consumption is held to a minimum with the help of handy tools. The Gennadi is also a member of For Nature and is a "forest ambassador" for the local environment.

The Gennadi has 288 rooms and suites, more than half of which have a private pool. If you get the chance, make sure to stay in one of the double rooms with a sea view: a dip in the pleasantly temperate water with a view of the Aegean Sea will swiftly become an evening ritual.

The Gennadi boasts an impressive eleven restaurants and bars, all with a focus on sustainability and seasonal ingredients. For breakfast, there's a buffet big enough to make a new discovery every morning. Once a week, you're also treated to an exclusive à la carte breakfast with Chef Drakos Lysimachos at the rooftop restaurant Eδesma, which is also open for dinner and offers tremendous creations. A must-try is the sea bass with celery root, black garlic, tarragon and mountain tea or the sea urchin linguini with egg and octopus. For an evening sundowner, stop by the Grevin Bar, relax on the terrace, enjoy the balmy breeze, and have a Negroni.

For a quick workout, the Gennadi offers a gym with a selection of modern equipment. Outdoor sporting options are available as well, such as tennis, biking, or hiking. An instructor offers aqua aerobics classes in the pool and is also on site for a table tennis match or a round of beach volleyball; no reservation required. On the beach, you can play golf or book a private sailing trip , which we would especially recommend. Retreat to the spa and health club afterwards and relax in the heated indoor pool, the sauna and the steam bath or treat yourself to various treatments.

The Gennadi's pools deserve their own paragraph: the resort has both a heated indoor pool at the spa, its own children's pool, an outdoor hot tub and three spacious fresh-water pools, lined with comfortable loungers. Chill out, soak up the sun and watch the aqua gym group do their thing. If you want to feel the salt of the sea on your skin, there's a private beach nearby as well.

Activities

Local culture is writ large at the Gennadi: try your hand at the island's cuisine during a cooking class as chef Lysimachos shares his secrets of the Greek "cucina povera" – sea-perch plaki with a summer vegetable caponata is on the menu. You can also get an artistic education: a ceramics workshop with the traditional company NassosKeramik at the hotel is artistically challenging and relaxing at the same time.
