Autumn is at its most beautiful in these regions of Austria

You love autumn and want to bring a little more colour into the partly grey weather? Then we have the most beautiful destinations for you.

8 October 2021

A short autumn vacation is good for everyone. We don't even have to travel far for it, because Austria has a lot to offer in this season. We have compiled a list of the most beautiful destinations for an autumn trip in Austria .

1. Gosau

Gosau is located in the Gosau Valley in Upper Austria. The region is located in the Salzkammergut and is therefore part of the Hallstatt-Dachstein Salzkammergut World Heritage Site. There is a lot to discover here. Whether for a romantic holiday for two or with the whole family: in the Gosau Valley you can go hiking, climbing and even diving. Thereby, the nature in Gosau offers enough material for the Instagram feed. Postcard motif number one, for example, is the Vordere Gosausee. But also the Hintere Gosausee is an idyllic mountain lake and especially worth a hike in autumn. But there is much more to do in the region. For climbers and cyclists there are also enough offers. If the temperatures have not yet dropped too low in autumn, you can try rafting in Bad Goisern.

2. lake Wörthersee

One tends to associate Lake Wörthersee in Carinthia with summer. But also in autumn the lake is worth a visit. Instead of swimming, you can go hiking and enjoy the breathtaking view. The 55 kilometre long Wörthersee circular trail offers something for everyone - for the leisurely walker as well as for experienced hikers. Those who want a bit of variety can try the yoga trail. Near Velden, the path leads along the Teufelsschlucht (Devil's Gorge) to ten stations where you can try out various yoga exercises. Those who don't want to spend their autumn holiday doing sports can, for example, take a boat trip and enjoy the view from the lake.

3. Oberstalleralm in East Tyrol

Oberstalleralm is a listed alpine village with 18 sun-baked alpine huts steeped in history. The old village is not only the perfect backdrop for an autumnal Instagram post, but also leads to numerous hikes such as from the Unterstalleralm to the Klapfbachwasserfall viewing platform, where you have a very good view of the highest mountains in the region. If you are looking forward to a snack while hiking, you can stop at the Unterstalleralm and enjoy a Brettljause.

4. Salzburg

If you don't necessarily have to go out into nature, but still don't want to miss out on a beautiful view, you can enjoy the autumnal atmosphere in the city of Salzburg. In rainy weather you can go to the DomQuartier or the birthplace of Mozart. Moreover, Salzburg's largest weekly market goes with the season. So if you want to allow autumn to enter your own kitchen, stroll through the stalls on Thursday mornings, taste Sturm and Most in between and let pumpkin and co. inspire you to new creations. The lights of the city are certainly even more beautiful after a sip of the young wine.
