Shaken, not stirred: these are the 6 most beautiful hotel bars for a martini

007 is back in action - and drinks significantly less than usual in "No Time to Die". Maybe it's because he doesn't yet know the best hotel bars for a martini?

4 October 2021

Daniel Craig is in full force. Even in his last adventure as an agent with a license to kill, bad guys are chasing him, there are fast cars, beautiful women, stunning locations and of course action galore. And for the first time also great feelings. With so much stress, it is perhaps no wonder that there is not only "No Time to Die", but also "No Time to Drink". Because the agent in the suit orders his martini much less often than before. Whether he would be able to resist this temptation for a martini in the wonderful ambience of some of the most beautiful hotel bars is questionable. Because here there are not only excellently mixed martini variations, but also a lot of style:

Scarfes Bar - The Rosewood, London

Scarfes is considered one of the best hotel bars in the world for its cocktails. © Rosewood Hotels & Resorts

Unsurpassed luxury in the British capital, elegant furnishings mixed with modern amenities and all of this in a former insurance building in Covent Garden - this hideaway in the lively city is perfect. The Scarfes Bar convinces with its cosiness and the ambience of a gentleman's club. Bond would feel right at home here. The creative cocktail menu, which makes Scarfes one of the best hotel bars in the world, naturally also includes the classic: Dry Martini.

The recipe:

  • 60 ml gin or vodka
  • 15 ml dry vermouth
  • 2 dashes orange bitters

Mix all ingredients together, pour into a coupette glass and garnish with an olive, a slice of lemon or a small pickled onion. Rebels shake the ingredients.

Aman Venice Bar, Venice

Must try: The Count's Martini. Bond would have a field day with it. © Aman

"Moonraker", "Casino Royale" and "Greetings from Moscow": They were all partly set in the lagoon city. Part of the impressive setting is also the Papadopoli Palazzo, home of the Aman Venice. And in its bar - a warm, inviting space overlooking the secret garden on the Grand Canal - they serve a special martini. The recipe for "The Count's Martini" pays homage to Giberto Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga, the owner of the Palazzo. It combines the Count's favorite flavors. And they are best enjoyed in the bar, with a view of the sunset over La Serenissima.

The recipe:

  • 80 ml Tanqueray Malacca extra chilled
  • 10 ml dry vermouth infused with mint and fennel seeds
  • Mint Scent
  • Mint Bltter

The ingredients are shaken, not stirred. And most stylishly served in a Giberto glass - also a special creation for the Aman Venice.

The Peace Bar, China Club Berlin

Not a hotel bar per se, but cool nonetheless. © China Club Berlin

In the Members-Only Club directly at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Chinese antiques meet contemporary Chinese art, Chinese haute cuisine and sophisticated flair. It's not hard to guess which country inspired owner and interior designer Anne Maria Jagdfeld. In the newly designed Peace Bar, bar manager Marcus Neumann creates sophisticated cocktails and drinks. The spirits for these - unlike the design concept - come from all over the world. Bond would feel at home between the shiny black bar counter, black wood, glass and mirror elements. And a real man also outshines the pink walls ...

Classic Martini - the recipe

  • 5 cl No. 3 London Dry Gin
  • 1 cl Noilly Prat French Dry Vermout
  • 5 drops of orange bitters
  • Lemon peel as garnish

Shaken or stirred - either way, the classic martini is a treat in fine style.

Fritz & Felix Bar, Brenners Parkhotel & Spa, Baden-Baden

When the Roaring Twenties meet the Black Forest, the result is a supremely elegant hotel bar. © Oetker Collection

The Casino Baden-Baden is not only one of the city's architectural landmarks, but also offers a wealth of history and exclusive flair. You almost expect to see Le Chiffre from "Casino Royale" sitting at the poker table. Not far from the casino is the beautiful Brenners Park Hotel & Spa. And housed here: the Fritz & Felix. In its bar, the exuberant lifestyle of the Roaring Twenties meets trendy ambience and a touch of the Black Forest. The mix is almost as perfect as the Black Martini of the house. Which, by the way, has one of the largest collections of German gins and whiskies. Some of the vermouths are homemade.

Black Martini - the recipe

  • 4-6 cl dark rum
  • 1 drop Wermouth Dry
  • Black olive in brine

Stir rum and vermouth in a mixing glass over ice until cold, strain drink into a frozen cocktail bowl, spear olive and garnish glass with it.

Le Bar du Bristol, Le Bristol Paris

"The Spy" cocktail was inspired by "The Spy Who Loved Me." © Oetker Collection

It's no coincidence that the Bar du Bristol at Le Bristol Paris is one of the most beautiful hotel bars for a martini. After all, it offers exceptional drinks and, thanks to the new terrace in the garden, an irresistible after-dark ambience under the Parisian night sky. Bond would definitely appreciate that. Just like the drink "The Spy". Because its inspiration was the 1977 James Bond film "The Spy Who Loved Me." The recipe? Top secret. The ingredients? Vodka infused with an oyster leaf and a splash of white Lillet (vermouth). It is - quelle surprise! - shaken, not stirred.

Donovan Bar, Brown's Hotel London

Martini for breakfast: What sounds like the title of a romantic spin-off about an aging and slightly frustrated single agent is actually a delightful cocktail from the Donovan Bar at Brown's Hotel. The iconic luxury hotel has long been a destination for discerning mixology fans. After all, the carefully curated cocktail menu comes from Salvatore Calabrese, the legendary master of cocktails. Also on the menu: "Vesper" - the cocktail Ian Fleming created for "Casino Royale" in 1953.

Breakfast Martini - the recipe

  • 4 cl gin
  • 1 cl Triple Sec (e.g. Cointreau)
  • 2 cl freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 2 bar spoons orange marmalade with pieces of peel
  • 1 zest of an organic orange
  • Ice cubes

Shake the ingredients vigorously in a shaker for at least 15 seconds, then double strain through a bar strainer into a pre-chilled martini goblet. Serve the Breakfast Martini with the orange zest as a garnish.
