The program includes contemporary music, including rock, folk, jazz, drum & bass and world music. But performing arts are not neglected either. The Burning Man Festival began in 1986, when just 20 people gathered to celebrate with festival founder Larry Harvey on the beach in San Francisco - and then burn a statue. Interest grew, San Francisco banned fires on the beach, Harvey and his followers then moved to Nevada's Black Rock Desert. It has been held here now since 1990. Self-awareness, self-expression, art and partying are the focus. The highlight is still the burning of the giant statue on Day 7. Every year, more than 75,000 people take part in the Burning Man Festival.
