The Indian Summer in the Engadine is so beautiful

With its shimmering colours and pleasant temperatures, the Swiss canton is particularly impressive in autumn.

16 August 2021

Natural silence, fresh air and a far-reaching view ensure that when you are on holiday in the mountains , you keep your distance from the noisy everyday life, move further away from worries with every step towards the summit and do something good for your body. The temperatures are pleasant and the slowly changing colours of the leaves create a unique sea of colours that can only be experienced in the mountains. Autumn in the Engadine, which many also refer to as the "Indian Summer", is one of the most beautiful seasons in the region in Switzerland.

580 kilometres of hiking trails

In total, the network of hiking trails in the St. Moritz region comprises 580 kilometres with all levels of difficulty, from high alpine hiking and mountaineering to hiking tours with children and carriage rides into the Roseg or Fex Valley, which is considered one of the most beautiful side valleys of the Engadine. The Fex Valley was protected by treaty in 1954, which means that there are no lifts, new holiday homes or car parks here. Here everything is still as it was in old engravings and photos.

The St. Moritz region boasts some of the most beautiful hiking trails and summit views in Switzerland. The classics include Muottas Muragl, Piz Nair, Corvatsch and Diavolezza, all of which can be reached sportily on foot or comfortably by train, which is particularly important for multi-generational holidays - everyone can experience the same feeling of happiness on the summit, even if not everyone is good on foot.

Large and small lakes - hotspot for kitesurfing and fly fishing

It comes punctually, every day at midday - the wind from Maloja - ideal for kitesurfing, wingfoiling, windsurfing, windflying and of course sailing on Lake Silvaplana. Those who can't do it yet, learn it in the legendary Windsurfing school in Silvaplana and the kitesurfing at Swiss Kitsurf. In addition to the four large Engadine lakes, there are also three small bathing lakes: the Lej da Staz, between Champfèr and St. Moritz, and the Lej Nair, only 500 metres away.

The Lej Nair offers an exceptional sport - fly fishing. The third in the group is the Lej Marsch at the edge of the forest of St. Moritz, below the Lej Nair. These three high-moor lakes get up to 20 degrees despite their altitude of 1,800 metres, whereas the large lakes do not get above 17 degrees.

Overnight stay at the "base camp" Giardino B&B - mountain railway tickets included

To make the Engadine an attractive summer destination, the Swiss Giardino Hotel Group has come up with something special. In summer, their luxury hotel Giardino Mountain transforms into the Giardino B&B Silvaplana for all those who love stylish rooms and a rich breakfast, but can otherwise do without the hotel restaurant and star service. For two nights or more, the price also includes mountain railway tickets to the peaks of the Engadine mountains. Bookings can only be made online via the hotel's own website in four categories: Double room with 25 m2 (also bookable as single room), Junior Suite with 30 m2 and suite with 55 m2.

You can enjoy a breakfast buffet with fresh products from the region, a fantastic indoor pool, saunas, steam baths and a fitness area. The hotel is a stone's throw away from Lake Silvaplana and is an ideal starting point for hiking, kite surfing or cycling tours.

Paradise for mountain bikers

Wonderful tours along the Silvaplana and Sils lakes to the Maloja Pass or from Sils-Maria into the high alpine Val Fex are bucketlist tours for cyclists and mountain bikers. The young wild ones can compete on numerous downhill trails. Bikes can be rented directly at the parking lot of the Giardino Bed & Breakfast in Champfèr. Ivo's Sportshop rents stylish e-bikes with which you can easily conquer altitudes, and Giardino B&B guests receive an exclusive 10% discount.
