1. Do your research in advance

Although there are currently few travel restrictions, certain destinations still have special requirements to enter. It's best to research potential entry regulations well in advance. This way, you'll still have enough time to take care of things like visas or vaccinations.

2. choose clever flight times

Speaking of time, if you have to be at a certain place on a certain day, for example to catch a cruise ship, it's better to arrive the day before. In case of a delay, you can still get there on time. If there is no delay, you can at least comfortably get settled at your destination. It's also better to choose flights early in the morning – they're usually less heavily booked.

3. Consider buffer times

There is something to be said for not showing up at security check at the last minute. If you allot enough time, you can get through stress free. That will leave you enough time to enjoy all the benefits that large airports have to offer. They are usually a shopping and food paradise. Hamad International Airport, for example, the home base of Qatar Airways, has won the award for "Best Airport in the World" two times in a row at the World Airport Awards. They're also home to most major fashion brands so you'll arrive in style.

4. take advantage of airline bonus programs

Most airlines offer their own bonus programs or are part of a larger network. Collecting points or miles comes with many benefits so make sure you don't miss out. You can easily register for free on the airlines' websites.

5. Treat yourself to lounge access

Lounges are a real blessing, especially when you have some time to kill. Not only can you eat well at airport lounges, you can also work in peace. Many of them have showers and washrooms as well to freshen up before boarding the plane. While some are reserved for passengers of a particular airline, there are usually lounges open to the public at every airport. Access usually costs around €50, and it's best to buy it when you book your flight to get a guaranteed spot.

6. Make use of stop-over programs

Sometimes there's no avoiding it: a lengthy stopover that takes several hours. Why sit around if you can turn it into a mini vacation? Select airlines offer their own stopover programs that allow you to get to know the destination at a reasonable price and even spend the night at a luxury hotel before venturing on. Taking a break in between makes even the longest routes much more pleasant.

7. observe the Cabin Bag Allowance

Trying to safely stow bulky luggage accounts for the majority of the boarding time. If you don't take more than you need, you'll contribute to a smoother boarding process. The best thing to do is to stick to the specified dimensions and weight specifications and not push the limit. Also, make sure to keep all your important documents and medication in your carry-on bag.

8. pack travel essentials

Airports are noisy, often hectic places. Noise-canceling headphones can be a real life-saver on the go. And remember: if you want to listen to your own music or audio books, you might have to download them first. It's best to do this at home in order to avoid roaming costs or disappointment if the wifi at the airport isn't fast enough. Because the air is usually dry in airports and planes, it's important to stay hydrated, so pack a refillable water bottle and don't forget to moisturize. If you're prone to dry eyes, be sure to bring eye drops as well.

9. stay friendly

There are situations in life you don't have any control over, neither as a pilot nor as a crew member. These include, for example, when an airport decides to postpone a landing permit. Or when an aircraft cannot take off due to weather conditions. The entire crew does its best to make this situation as pleasant as possible for everyone involved. Being rude won't speed up the process in any way. But it certainly makes the wait more unpleasant for everyone.

10. get a free upgrade

What many people don't know: if there are seats available on a flight in a higher booking class, you might be able to get a free upgrade. Sometimes it's enough to simply ask politely.
