Rosewood Hotels & Resorts becomes operator of the legendary Hotel Bauer in Venice

After opening in Vienna, international hotel group Rosewood lands its next big coup - at René Benko's Signa property, the traditional Hotel Bauer Palazzo in Venice.

13 June 2022

It was only in 2019 that Rosewood caused a stir with the announcement that it would open a Rosewood Vienna on Petersplatz, in the former Erste Group Bank AG headquarters. And while the Viennese hotel is about to open, the hotel group is already surprising with the next announcement: the tradition-rich Hotel Bauer Palazzo is to open its luxury doors as Rosewood Venice around Easter 2025.

Rosewood Venice from 2025

Perhaps some of you will remember: it was only in 2020 that the historic five-star deluxe hotel was acquired by René Benko's Signa Prime Selection. Now the Rosewood Group is taking over the hotel management from Signa. The Palazzo will be closed for this purpose at the end of 2022 and undergo an elaborate makeover. The grand reopening under a new name and new management is scheduled for 2025.

"The plan is to make the building the flagship hotel of Rosewood Hotels," says Signa project manager Dietmar Ploberger. As part of the renovation and conversion work, the traditional house is to be further developed into a high-class ultra-luxury hotel with spacious retail areas on the first floor and an attractive roof garden. The 191 rooms of the Palazzo will not only be renovated to a high standard, but also enlarged and thus reduced to a spacious 111 rooms.

One point of contact

The Hotel Bauer Palazzo' is already one of the top addresses in the lagoon city - and far beyond its Canali. Not surprisingly, the Bauer has stood for Italian tradition, authenticity and comfortable luxury for over a century. Situated on the Grand Canal with a view over the turquoise blue lagoon - less than five minutes from St. Mark's Square - it welcomes its guests in an inimitably Italian ambience and comfortably and privately via the hotel's own landing stage on the Canalazzo.

The Hotel Bauer Palazzo is also unique in its direct location on the world-famous Calle Larga XXII Marzo: in the centrally located luxury retail street, you will find yourself between numerous flagship stores of the very big names - from Chanel, Gucci and Salvatore Ferragamo to Giorgio Armani.

So the Hotel Bauer Palazzo is a point of contact - for private boats and gondolas as well as the international Haut Monde. And with the takeover by Rosewood, this will probably become even more idolized.

From one hand to the next

Founded in 1880 as the Bauer-Grünwald Hotel by the young Austrian Julius Grünwald and the father of his bride, the hotel manager Bauer, the Ligurian shipbuilder Arnaldo Bennati and finally, his family took over the traditional hotel in 1930. Only in 2019, it was sold to the American hedge fund Elliott. Since early summer 2020, the Bauer Palazzo hotel has been owned by the Signa real estate group - and thus once again in Austrian hands. From 2025, Rosewood Hotels will be the operator and namesake of the traditional hotel.
