Hollywood in Europe: These are the places where cult series were filmed

On the heels of Game of Thrones, The Crown & Co.

April 7, 2021

Currently, we rather reminisce about past vacations and spend a lot of time watching series instead of planning our next trip. But we still don't have to do without that holiday feeling! Because most series that bring a little distraction into the stressful everyday life were filmed in dreamlike locations that are not even that far away. For example, in beautiful Croatia, the spectacular Highlands in Scotland or urban Berlin.

Here are five places in Europewhere cult series were filmed and which are perfect as the next holiday destination - or simply to soothe wanderlust.

Dubrovnik & Split, Croatia: "Game of Thrones"

Croatia has long been considered one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. But at the latest since the cult series "Game of Thrones" gained a foothold there, the land of 1000 islands also enjoys worldwide fame. The fictional town of King's Landing is actually located in Dubrovnik. The old town in particular, known for its imposing city walls, is often featured in the series. Another filming location in the city is also the Lovrijenac fortress, right on the sea coast and surrounded by high cliffs. For numerous outdoor scenes, the "Game of Thrones" production shifted its filming to the Krka National Park. And some scenes from the famous series were also shot on Split. For example, in Diocletian's Palace, which is around 1,700 years old and serves as the setting for some bloody slave fights.

Split and Dubrovnik gained international fame through "Game of Thrones".

Aberdeenshire, Scotland: "The Crown"

"The Crown" has become a cult series. It reflects the life of Queen Elizabeth II and the British royal family. The filming locations include London, the south of England and the Scottish Highlands. Especially Balmoral Castle in the north of Scotland, which is also the summer residence of the Queen, often appears in the series. The Scottish Baronial-style castle has been the setting in "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," "Outlander" and the latest James Bond flick, "No Time to Die." And the Ardverikie Estate, a 19th century mansion near Newtonmore in Scotland, has also had some scenes filmed.

The Scottish Highlands often served as a filming location for "The Crown", Balmoral Castle is the summer residence of the real Queen and also receives attention in the series.

Berlin, Germany: "Homeland"

The gritty spy series "Homeland" has already seen several continents. Among them also Europe. Because some filming of the fifth season was unceremoniously relocated to Berlin. Studio Babelsberg as well as the German capital Berlin were made the setting for the series, which revolves around CIA analyst Carrie Mathison and war returnee Nicholas Brody. The producers used the Mauerstraße in Berlin-Mitte as the main location, transforming it into a "Baghdad Green Zone". But the Brandenburg Gate, Alexanderplatz and Berlin's main train station also play a major role in the series.

The famous landmarks of Berlin, such as the Brandenburg Gate, are frequently featured in "Homeland."

Bath & London, England: "Bridgerton"

The Netflix series "Bridgerton" took international hearts by storm. The story is set in Regency-era England and is based on the novels by Julia Quinn. The idyllic filming locations make you want to explore the breathtakingly beautiful areas of the country. Such as Bath, in the southwest of England. Founded by the Romans, the city was a vibrant social centre in 1800 and is now considered a special jewel of Regency style. In particular, the Royal Crescent - home to the wealthy Featherington family in the series, but in reality a luxury hotel and museum - is among the most frequent filming locations in "Bridgerton." And the London borough of Richmond, which sits right on the banks of the Thames, also serves as a setting. This is because Hampton Court Palace - the opulent residence of the fictional Queen Charlotte - is located there.

The Royal Crescent is in reality a luxury hotel as well as a museum and in Richmond on the Thames Charlotte, the Queen lives in "Bridgerton".

Madrid, Spain: "House of Money"

Since the broadcast of the hit series "House of Money", Madrid is experiencing a new boom. Because the Spanish capital is the flagship of the crook series. First, the Spanish banknote printing house comes into focus, then the central bank is the main setting. And also smaller places around Madrid, such as Torrelodones, where the finca "El Gasco" is located, which served as a training ground for the budding robbers in the first two seasons. A central location in season three is a supposed Italian monastery, where the professor presents his team with plans for another heist. However, the Ermita de San Frutos monastery is not in Italy, but in Segovia, Spain. However, the interior shots of the imposing building were filmed in a farmhouse near the monastery.

The main setting of "House of Money" is the Spanish city of Madrid.
