Island dream without mass tourism: The most beautiful islands without crowds of visitors

5 insider tips that you should not miss.

April 2, 2021

Crowds are now an impossibility for many. Those who can't get used to mass tourism and overcrowded beaches again so quickly should consider a holiday away from the crowds. There are plenty of places to do so! And the best thing about it: some of them are even in Europe and easy to reach.

Here are five Islandswhich are currently still considered insider tips and where you are guaranteed to enjoy an undisturbed holiday.

La Gomera, Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are considered as a popular holiday destination of the Europeans. Not infrequently, one encounters large crowds in the hotels or on the beaches. La Gomera, the second smallest island of the Canary Islands is still considered a real insider tip. In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, there are impressive lava beaches with black sand, dreamlike fairytale forests and deep gorges surrounded by imposing peaks. La Gomera is ideal not only for an undisturbed beach holiday, but also for adventurous hikes and relaxing moments in the forest. The island is also known for its sustainable tourism, which aims to protect nature and the idyllic habitats of plants, animals but also inhabitants.

Between lava beaches and rock formations: La Gomera is considered an insider tip on the Canary Islands.

Juist, North Sea, Germany

When you think of the North Sea in Germany, you often have an image of crowded beaches and sun-hungry holidaymakers in your head. Besides the well-known (and often overcrowded) towns, such as Cuxhaven, Friedrichstadt and Dornum, there are some pearls in the north of Germany that are still undiscovered and where you can relax with pleasure. Like Juist, for example, a small island in the middle of the Wadden Sea. There is no sign of mass tourism there yet - on the contrary! The tides ensure that the ferry can only cross to Juist once a day during high tide. This means that there are no day tourists and you have the longest beach on the East Frisian island to yourself. Sustainability also plays a big role on Juist. By 2030, the island has the goal of achieving climate neutrality.

While most places on the North Sea are overcrowded, you will find an oasis of peace on the small island of Juist.

Karpathos, Greece

Probably Greece would not be at the top of your list of places to visit far away from mass tourism. Yet there are around 6000 different Greek islands, 227 of which are completely uninhabited. Besides Rhodes, Santorini and Crete, there are numerous other dream destinations in Greece. Karpathos for example. The island is located in the very south and is the second largest of the Dodecanese archipelago after Rhodes. Deep blue water, miles of sandy beaches and small villages with white houses made sure that Karpathos has often been called the secret Santorini. Since the island is very far away from the rest of the country, it is also considered by the Greeks themselves as a true insider tip.

Besides the well-known Greek islands, there are numerous pearls that are still undiscovered. Such as the idyllic island of Karpathos.

Åland in Finland

Even if the term "dream island" is not immediately associated with the Scandinavian region, there are very well places in northern Europe that are perfectly suitable as a holiday destination and have so far been spared from mass tourism. The Åland archipelago, for example, is one of them. The altogether 6,700 (!) small islands of Åland are located between Sweden and Finland and are considered a politically autonomous region. While the official language is Swedish, the islands officially belong to Finland. There is a lot to discover there! Numerous idyllic villages and coastal towns stretch across the archipelago. Also very special are the red granite cliffs, from which you have a breathtakingly beautiful view of the roaring sea and an unforgettable sunset.

The Finnish archipelago inspires with a breathtaking nature.

Bird Island, Seychelles

Sustainability and privacy can be perfectly combined in the Seychelles. Bird Island in particular promises an escape from everyday life, which is often dominated by stress and hectic. The northernmost island of the Seychelles is one of the last paradisiacal refuges on earth. One of the reasons for this is that there is only one accommodation on Bird Island. The lodge is focused on sustainability and ecotourism. Air conditioners, refrigerators, televisions and telephones are not to be found there. Guests can stay a maximum of seven nights, day tourists are almost non-existent. What also makes the island special is the fact that it closes twice a year for a month each time so that the native birds can breed in peace.

There is definitely no mass tourism on Bird Island!
