Italian newcomer to the Four Seasons portfolio

Renovation and new management of a Sicilian icon

17 September 2020

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, the world's leading luxury company based in Canada, in partnership with renowned hotel development company Gruppo Statuto, announces the reopening of the historic San Domenico Palace property in Taormina, Sicily as "San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel" following extensive renovations.

San Domenico Palace: Perfect base for the Four Seasons extravaganza

The San Domenico Palace is uniquely located on the hill of the town of Taormina on the east coast of Sicily and enchants with its view of the bay of Taormina and the Ionian Sea. The hotel features several terraces with unobstructed views of the turquoise waters as well as the famous Etna, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a beach club, lush gardens and several restaurants and bars, including the two-Michelin-starred Principe Cerami restaurant. The hotel is at home within the historic walls of an old 15th-century Dominican convent, as well as a Grand Hotel wing that has complemented the building since 1896. The guest rooms as well as the public spaces feature original architecture and facades of the historic building. Known as one of the most famous hotels in the world, notable guests such as Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Taylor and DH Lawrence have all stayed here. Nestled in the idyllic Sicilian countryside, the town of Taormina is also known for its numerous historical sites, including an ancient Greek theatre and the medieval Corvaja Palace.

The Four Seasons collection of unique and architecturally significant heritage hotels includes buildings whose origins range from the fifteenth to the early twentieth century.

New polish for historic property

"San Domenico Palace is an exceptional property located in one of the most historic and charming corners of Italy and it is a privilege to expand our presence in the region with this iconic property," said John Davison, President and CEO of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts. "After many years of successful partnership between Gruppo Statuto and our hotel in Milan, it is an honor that Gruppo Statuto has selected Four Seasons to manage this beautiful hotel. We look forward to working together on this new project and welcoming our guests to a new Four Seasons experience at San Domenico Palace."

San Domenico Palace, Taormina, A Four Seasons Hotel will reopen under the leadership of General Manager Lorenzo Maraviglia. Lorenzo Maraviglia's Four Seasons career began in 2015, where he served as former F&B Director at Four Seasons Resort Dubai Jumeirah Beach, before subsequently joining Four Seasons Hotel Dubai International Financial Centre as Hotel Manager. Lorenzo has been in Taormina for the past few months, where he was on-site overseeing the hotel's pre-opening and building a new team that will soon welcome guests to Italy's newest Four Seasons Hotel. Following extensive renovations, the hotel will reopen with 111 guest rooms and suites, a new beach club and restaurant, as well as the two-Michelin-starred Principe Cerami restaurant and restored public areas. The hotel is also home to a state-of-the-art spa, which features seven treatment rooms, a private indoor pool and a Turkish hamam.
