Kempinski Hotel Nanjing unveils two new gourmet restaurants

Guests can now indulge in the exclusive eateries Jin Kai Lou and Frieda. Bon appétit!

19 July 2021

Two new restaurants now complement the culinary options at Kempinski Hotel Nanjing: the Chinese restaurant Jin Kai Lou and the second Frieda Restaurant in China. The two restaurants, located in the venerable Wangzilou building, offer diverse gastronomic experiences and inspire with a combination of Chinese and Western cuisine that transcends time and space.

Restaurant Jin Kai Lou

The new Jin Kai Lou Chinese restaurant embodies the elegance of pre-1949 China with an exquisite modern twist, fusing northern and southern Chinese ingredients with Cantonese cuisine. It has 11 private rooms in addition to the main room, where quality and privacy are paramount. Each private room boasts antique color palettes with marble, wood finishes and bronze metal. This is complemented by elegant and sleek furniture and artwork, mostly featuring aviation elements, reflecting the building's origins as a pilots' club. Chef Yap Kim Leong is a master of fusion cuisine, creating Cantonese dishes combined with the essence of local food culture.

Restaurant Frieda

As a tribute to the daughter, Frieda, of the brand founder Berthold Kempinski, who, like her father, was known for her generosity and hospitality, the furniture and design of the new restaurant embody simplicity in a warm atmosphere. Terrazzo and wooden floors, combined with rattan sofas, give the space a relaxed ambience. Thanks to chef Jakob Ehrensberger, guests will no longer find the usual "knuckle of pork with sauerkraut" on Frieda's menu. Having already opened the first Frieda restaurant in China, at the Kempinski Hotel Hangzhou, Ehrensberger is continuing his story with the successful restaurant concept in Nanjing. He skillfully uses his authentic cooking skills to create potato dumplings or chili ginger eggplant combined with German influence to create a gourmet experience. Cocktails and a rich selection of gin at the day bar complete the appealing offer.

The new splendor in the legendary Wangzilou

Wangzilou, also known as Building No. 24, is located in the Qinhuai District, adjoining the main hotel building and is one of the many outbuildings of the Ming Palace. It originally housed the pilots' club of the Ming Palace Airport. When viewed from the air, the roof structure of the building resembles the Chinese character "王" ("Wang" in Chinese Pinyin means king), giving the building the name Wangzilou (Wang Character Building).
