99,000 searches. Every second. That’s the query volume handled by the popular search engine Google. This adds up to 8.5 billion searches worldwide every day. In our part of the world, Google dominates with a market share of just over 90 percent, making it the undisputed leader. Search behavior provides direct insights into global trends, and in 2002, Google released its first report on the year’s search activity under the name Google Zeitgeist. Today, it’s known as the Year in Search report. But what intriguing insights did the Year in Search 2024 reveal about travel destinations?

Often referred to as the Gateway to the Arctic, Tromsø, located north of the Arctic Circle, impresses with its breathtaking natural beauty. Visitors have the chance to witness the spectacular Northern Lights from September to March. In the summer, the Midnight Sun ensures daylight around the clock. For those looking to do more than just marvel, activities like dog sledding, whale watching, and hiking through the stunning fjords offer plenty of adventure. Compared to the previous year, search interest in Tromsø increased by 85 percent.

According to Google Year in Search 2024, interest in the Andalusian city also surged, with a 133 percent increase in search queries. It’s no surprise, given the abundance of attractions. In spring, the Festival de los Patios Cordobeses showcases the city at its most stunning, as residents decorate their courtyards in hopes of winning the top prize. Architectural highlights like Mezquita-Catedral, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are must-sees. And the culinary scene? In Andalusia, it’s nothing short of spectacular!

Tartu, Estonia

The heightened interest in Tartu last year is undoubtedly linked to its role as a European Capital of Culture. However, Estonia’s second-largest city has long been a popular destination for art and culture enthusiasts—and it still is. Numerous events, festivals, and exhibitions throughout the year reinforce its appeal. Tartu is also home to some of the oldest universities in Eastern Europe, and its vibrant student life contributes to the city’s relaxed vibe. Add to that its unique architecture—a blend of neoclassical buildings and modern design—and it’s easy to see why. Search interest in Tartu increased by an impressive 294 percent last year.

Reggio Calabria, Italy

Reggio Calabria also gained significant popularity, with search interest increasing by over 540 percent, according to Google Year in Search 2024. This surge is likely due to the introduction of new flight connections. For many travelers, Reggio Calabria became an attractive alternative to the ever-popular Amalfi Coast last year. This charming city at the southern tip of Italy stands out with its Italian cuisine, spectacular beaches, and rich cultural heritage. At the National Museum, for instance, visitors can admire the ancient Riace Bronzes from Greece.

Gili Islands, Indonesia

The Gili Islands recorded the highest increase in search interest by far. It’s worth noting, however, that Google’s report uses relative figures rather than absolute ones. This means that a 750 percent increase from a baseline of 2 searches would translate to just 17 additional queries compared to the previous year. The exact rise isn’t disclosed, but it was described as significant. The tropical Gili Islands—comprising Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, and Gili Air—are undoubtedly popular. After all, visitors can relax on powder-white sandy beaches and enjoy diving and snorkeling adventures around the car-free islands.
