Blockbusters were filmed at these dream locations in Europe

Hollywood sends its regards

12 March 2021

The film industry is now so advanced that with a little technology enormous effects can be achieved. For many shoots, the actors don't even have to leave the big film studios in Hollywood and are then in the middle of the French Riviera in the finished flick. But most blockbusters still focus on authenticity and move the shooting to the place where the film is set according to the set design. This is doubly exciting for viewers, because it often gives them the opportunity to actually visit the locations. Whether you walk in the footsteps of the godfather, immerse yourself in the world of Harry Potter or get a whiff of Star Wars.

Here are five locations where already spectacular Blockbuster were filmed and which you can easily travel yourself.

1

London, Great Britain: "Notting Hill"

If you've ever been to London, you've probably visited the exclusive district of Notting Hill, where the film of the same name starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant was shot. The colourful rows of houses are characteristic and also reflect the whole mentality of London. Moreover, the district in the west of London became a world famous sight due to the movie. Just around the corner there is also the "Travel Bookshop", where Hugh Grant works as William Thacker - in the last years several shops, like antique shops, souvenir shops or book stores alternated there. And also the famous blue door, which plays a big role in the movie, is located in Notting Hill. The former owner of the house even had to paint the door grey in the meantime, as countless tourists and film fans gathered in front of it every day. In the meantime, however, it is blue again.

2

Oxford University, England: "Harry Potter"

If you've ever wanted to explore the spectacular premises of Harry Potter's wizarding school Hogwarts, you don't have to travel to a film studio to do it. Because some of the filming took place at Oxford University. Especially the first part "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was almost completely filmed at the famous university. The "forbidden library", for example, is anything but secret in real life. Because in Duke Humfrey's library on the campus of the university, numerous inquisitive students cavort every day. And the world-famous Dining Hall in the "Harry Potter" films really does exist. This is located in Christ Church University, which is one of 39 constituent colleges of the University of Oxford.

3

Lake Como, Italy: "Star Wars"

The world of "Star Wars" and with it the planet Naboo is closer to Earth than we thought. To be precise, some sequences of the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy were filmed on Italy's Lake Como, which is also known for another very famous guest: Hollywood star George Clooney. But back to "Star Wars": the majestic Villa del Balbianello offers a brilliant view of the beautiful Lake Como. Presumably, the producers of the cult film series also chose this location for the wedding of the characters Anakin and Padme.

4

Görlitz, Germany: "Grand Budapest Hotel

The award-winning film by Wes Anderson, "Grand Budapest Hotel" is probably remembered by many - not only because of the star-studded characters. The hotel is also an apparition that one would like to book immediately. But unfortunately, this is not possible, as the exclusive premises are purely fictional in nature. However, if you still want to get a glimpse of the crazy and colorful world of the film, it is best to visit Goerlitz in Germany. The eastern city borders Poland and provided a perfect location for the film with its medieval streets merging with Art Nouveau and Gothic architecture. The scenes in the lobby of the hotel were filmed in the Görlitz department store - one of the few department stores to survive World War II.Fun Fact: Because Görlitz has often been used as a location for famous Hollywood productions (such as "Inglourious Bastards", "the Book Thief"), it is also affectionately known as "Görliwood".

5

Sicily, Italy: "The Godfather"

It's probably no surprise that the iconic gangster film series "The Godfather" revolves around the machinations of the real Italian mafia. Of course, the filming should then also take place in the original locations. Like, say, Sicily. For some, the Italian Mediterranean island is a holiday paradise, for others a spectacular film location. Most of the time the film takes place in Corleone, after all everything revolves around the mafia boss "Don Corleone", but in reality many of these scenes were shot in Savoca, another, equally breathtakingly beautiful part of Sicily.
