These are the most beautiful car-free islands

Sustainability even on holiday: no cars on these islands!

26 August 2021

If you want to really switch off on holiday, you usually need complete peace and quiet. No horns, no engine noise and no squealing brakes. In Europe and other parts of the world, there are actually still islands where there are no cars. Instead, you rely on your own two legs, bicycles or donkeys. The absence of cars also brings several advantages. On the one hand, the renunciation ensures better and cleaner air, on the other hand, it contributes to the slowing down of everyday life and thus to the reduction of stress.

Because holidays are for relaxation! These five car-free islands make it possible...

1. hydra, greece

The island of Hydra offers Greek flair and can be reached in less than two hours by ferry. You won't find real roads, cars or even bicycles here. Instead, travelers take water taxis from the beautiful harbor to deserted beaches and tavernas. Donkeys are the main mode of transport on this quiet island in the Mediterranean.

2. lamu, Kenya

The island of Lamu became known, among other things, by the mention on the UNESCO World Heritage List as the "oldest and best preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa". The most common means of transport on the holiday island are donkeys, as vehicles are not allowed on Lamu. There are about 2,000 to 3,000 donkeys for every 25,000 inhabitants. Visitors to Lamu can look forward to secluded beaches, plenty of peace and quiet and car-free hiking trails.

3. Porquerolles, France

The small port town on the island is located in the south of France, between Marseille and Nice. Instead of seeing and hearing numerous cars as usual, you will find palm tree lined squares, retreats and many beaches on Porquerolles. Forests of pine trees provide shady spots on the holiday island. Thanks to the ferry connection, Porquerolles is perfect for a day trip by bike or a longer stay.

4. gili islands, indonesia

The Indonesian Gili Islands are located near Bali and are often referred to by visitors as "The Turtle Capital of the World" or the "Party Islands". All of the Gili Islands offer special experiences. For holidaymakers in a party mood, boat tours are offered, for water rats there are diving and snorkelling trips and for relaxation and finding yourself, aqua yoga is recommended. Idyllic beaches with crystal clear water and exotic marine life await you on the holiday islands. Instead of cars, horse-drawn carts and electric bikes are often used.

5. Hiddensee, Germany

The holiday island of Hiddensee, which measures just under 19 square kilometres, can also be reached by ferry. Once there, you'll find seemingly endless sandy beaches overlooking the Baltic Sea, wild and rugged cliffs and magical pine forests. The best thing about Hiddensee is that all traffic is prohibited on the entire island, as the place is considered a nature reserve and breeding ground for many birds. Those looking for a destination to relax and unwind will find meditative tranquility at Hiddensee.
