The best nautical experiences in Croatia

Croation adventure for sailors and sea lovers!

15 September 2021

Croatia offers sailing history and culinary delights. Because in this country you can set your sails in the same place as historical greats have done before you, sipping the wine made with millennia-old winemaking tradition .

Discover Croatia like historical celebrities

Even historical celebrities such as Odysseus or Richard the Lionheart navigated through Croatian waters or landed, perhaps not always voluntarily at the time due to a shipwreck, for example, on Croatian islands such as Mljet and Lokrum. Nowadays, many explorers in Croatia like to set sail to discover special landscapes or to get to know culturally rich points of the coast. The wonderful flora and fauna of many national and nature parks as well as the rich underwater world can best be explored by boat.

Classic Croatian wooden boats

Traditional wooden boats such as beautifully restored Falkuša wooden sailboats from Vis are still offered to rent for sailing trips in Croatia. The classic boats are often even still produced in family businesses, such as the GAJETA in the towns of Betina or on the island of Korčula with old shipbuilding tradition, going back to the 13th century. The flat-bottomed boats of Rovinj, the BATANAS, are even protected by Unesco and the beautiful single-masted BRACERAS await you all along the Croatian Adriatic coast. The imposing TRABAKEL, on the other hand, was a solid Dalmatian-Venetian merchant ship 20 meters long with 2 masts for up to 20 sailors.

The best sailing season for connoisseurs in Croatia

If you want moderate temperatures, less crowds and more time for various activities, the Croatian islands are especially inviting in autumn. Enchanting sunsets and great coastal resorts, but far less crowding in the bays and at the moorings. In some places there is even a free berth waiting and the type of boat you want is easier to get than in the rest of the season. Because the winds are also more stable, the pleasure of sailing comes to the fore again and when discovering lonely bays, this time you may really be alone with the sound of the sea!

Here you can set sail

Croatia's excellent marine infrastructure supports modern sailors with over 60 marinas along the coast and more on the islands. Thus, unknown stretches of coastline and fascinating islands can be enjoyed with the salty sea air on the skin. The nautical tourist tax for boat owners and users is simply paid electronically and contactless via an online portal . According to the Tourism Tax Act, the tourist tax can be paid according to the length of the boat or according to the number of people and the number of nights.
