Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Europeans. It can happen that the most famous islands like Crete, Rhodes and Santorini are a bit overcrowded. But if you still don't want to miss out on this dreamlike country with all its idyllic bays and dreamy old towns, you're in luck! Because among the total of 6000 islands of the country, there is still one or the other, which convinces with lonely beaches and unforgettable Greek flair.

Here are five Greek islands that are considered real insider tips and promise a relaxing holiday.

1. Thassos

Thassos is not only the most northern inhabited island of Greece, it is also called the "green island". The paradise in the Thracian Sea inspires with a lush vegetation of Calabrian pine and olive trees. The untouched nature lures to hikes and dreamlike walks. And also the old town of Limenas with its old harbour and a variety of historical sights make Thassos the perfect holiday destination. Those who prefer to relax can lie comfortably on the endlessly long sandy beach of the Greek pearl and cool off in the turquoise blue sea.

2. hydra

Small but nice is the island of Hydra, near Athens. It is very easy to reach by speedboat. Once arrived, visitors are enchanted by the irresistible charm of summer. Those seeking peace and quiet are also in the right place here. Because there is no trace of street noise or nightlife here. Instead, the island captivates with a dreamlike old town, beautiful beaches and an idyllic atmosphere. Those interested in culture will be amazed by the magnificent villas, historic churches and interesting art exhibitions. A special highlight is the yacht of the art collector Dakis Joannou, which was designed by Jeff Koons and is moored at the port of Hydra. By the way: Thanks to its authentic flair, the small island is also a popular retreat for stars like Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton.

3. skopelos 

Skopelos belongs to the Sporades and is the largest island of this group. And yet it is by no means overcrowded and you can spend a relaxing holiday there. 66 kilometres of coastline are just waiting to be explored. From water sports to bathing fun and cultural highlights; this insider tip among the Greek islands really offers everything you long for. In addition, Skopelos is home to one of Greece's first Marine National Parks. Snorkelers and divers meet an indescribable underwater world. The main town of Skopelos is like a picture book. The whitewashed houses, which nestle around a hill directly on the sea, are reminiscent of Santorini. With the difference that here you can find peace and quiet off the beaten track.

4. Chios

One of the unknown islands in Greece is Chios, just a few kilometres from the Turkish coast. The wild sand and pebble beaches on the East Aegean are criss-crossed by large rock massifs, which make especially active holidaymakers and hiking lovers happy. Chios guarantees an unforgettable holiday away from the tourist crowds and rewards its visitors with spectacular views from higher points. Small villages, such as Pyrgi attract with quaint tavernas and also the wine and olive growing do not come up short on the island.

5. folegandros

Only 40 kilometers from the world famous island of Santorini, hides another island that is one of the insider tips and at least as breathtaking: Folegandros. Especially impressive is the island's capital Chora, located in the southern Aegean Sea. Because this place is located so close to the steep coast that you have a dreamlike view to the sea from almost every angle. High up on a hill, the medieval city fortification Kastro is the highest point of Chora. And also the lighthouse at Cape Mihelo is considered a special attraction of the island. Lonely beaches without crowds of people, but with crystal clear water and soft sand provide pure relaxation.
