Seventh place in the Top Ten Places to be: Lake Garda

A guide through the natural paradise in the north of Italy.

19 March 2021

A holiday in Italy does not always have to mean the south coast and Mediterranean flair. The north of this incredibly diverse country also has a lot to offer. The Lake Garda for example, which is also the largest inland lake in the country. The region is characterised by a mild climate, dreamy villages and a varied landscape. From dream beaches to an alpine mountain paradise; Lake Garda has a great appeal for holidaymakers of all kinds. That's why, according to a survey of Falstaff TRAVEL readers, the northern Italian region is also in seventh place in the Top Ten Places to Be.

The current Corona situation makes entry into the country not exactly easy. However, when the situation around New Infection improves, some relief can be expected. In the meantime, you can sweeten the time with a breathtaking insight into the northern part of Italy.

Dreamy alleys and picturesque old towns are not uncommon on Lake Garda. Like here, in the wine village of Bordolino.

One lake, three regions

Being the largest inland lake in Italy, Lake Garda is also spread over three different regions. The northernmost part is located in Trentino-Alto Adige, in the west the lake is located in Lombardy and in the east in Veneto. If you travel to Lake Garda, it is best to plan a little more time and mobility to also explore the unique diversity of the surrounding area and maybe even circumnavigate the lake once. The lake is known for its deep blue water, which is often reminiscent of the Mediterranean, as well as the miles of dream beaches lined with stylish cafes and typical regional restaurants. Holidaymakers also enjoy the Mediterranean flair between palm trees, lemon trees and olive groves.

And also active holidaymakers will find their happiness around Lake Garda. In the north, numerous two-thousand-metre mountains are waiting to be climbed. However, the 2218-metre-high Monte Baldo on the eastern shore is particularly popular. Because of its diversity, both leisurely hikers and adventurous climbers can take advantage of the mountain. The climb is worth it! Because the summit offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the lake.

From the top of Monte Baldo you have a sensational view of Lake Garda.

At the foot of the mountain is the picture-book town of Malcesine. The picturesque facades, cozy cafes and playful promenades make it one of the most popular destinations around Lake Garda. The small harbour also invites you to linger. Popular sights are the baroque church Santo Stefano, the 13th century Skaligerburg and the gothic palace Capitani. But not only those interested in culture and mountaineers will get their money's worth in Malcesine - water sports enthusiasts will also find paradise there. Because of the Ora and Pelér winds, the eastern part of Lake Garda is perfect for windsurfers and sailors.

The dreamlike place Malcesine already served Goethe as a great inspiration.

Those who prefer a more relaxed seaside holiday may be drawn towards the south, where the landscape is flatter and in the Italian lowlands. The shores are surrounded by palm trees and citrus trees - a feeling like at the Mediterranean Sea. But the highlights probably also include the numerous wine regions, which simply belong to Italy like pasta and olive oil. The wine town of Bordolino in particular is a popular destination for immersing yourself in the culture of Italy. Here you can enjoy the sparkling rosé wine in one of the countless wine cellars. If you're ever in the area, a stop in the quaint town of Lazise is also recommended. The small winding harbour offers a perfect starting point for a leisurely stroll. Past the numerous pubs that have settled on the waterfront promenade, your path will lead you directly into the quaint old town. Even further south is the wonderful town of Sirmione. The special thing about it: the town is separated from the mainland by a moat, which belongs to the Scaliger castle, and forms a small idyllic island, which is ideal for a bathing holiday.

Sirmione has created its own little idyll.

Also the western part of Lake Garda captivates with a dreamlike landscape. Many parts of it are still true insider tips, where you can enjoy the beauty of the region without crowds. Especially the small town of Limone, whose main attraction (as the name suggests) are lemon gardens, is worth a visit. But also the quiet Gargnano (Attention: not to be confused with Gargano in Apulia) shines with noble hotels, fantastic restaurants and fragrant pine forests.

The quiet village of Limone is one of the insider tips around Lake Garda.
