Why We Want to Go to Ras al Khaimah Now

Even the name of the destination sounds like the Arabian Nights: Ras al Khaimah. There are many reasons to visit the city in the emirate of the same name.

Vacation far from the masses

Ras al Khaimah, actually Ra's al-Chaima in its own spelling, is the capital of the emirate of the same name. The city is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf. While it was once a fishermen's and pirates' nest that grew rather wildly, there has been planned urban development since 1990. Its appearance is still rather rural, with many trees and low houses. The city is considered far more authentic than ostentatious Dubai. However, since most Emirates travelers still tend to visit Dubai or Abu Dhabi, Ras al Khaimah is much more relaxed.

Particularly safe destination

Just like its sister emirates, the youngest member of the United Arab Emirates is also considered a particularly safe travel destination. It's one of the countries with the lowest crime rate worldwide. Violent crimes are officially unknown. However, unlike other emirates the population isn't mainly local. As a result, the rules regarding alcohol and dress code are also more relaxed. The emirate is more western and open than, say, Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

Lush flora and fauna

The climate in Ras al Khaimah can be quite warm in the summer by European standards. Up to 45 degrees are common in midsummer. From end of October to May is the best time to travel to the desert state. Because then on average pleasant temperatures of 27 degrees prevail. The sun shines 9 hours a day. The special topography means that it's also comparatively green. Thanks to the Hajar Mountains, precipitation is more frequent in the mountains.

Along the coast there are protected lagoons where, for example, mangrove forests characterize the landscape. They are home to a diverse bird population. In the desert dunes, whose transition to the beach dunes is often fluid, camels are on the move. And even flamingos can be seen here.

Destination for adventurers

Zip Lining Ras Al Khaimah

Over the years, Ras al Khaimah has also made a name for itself among thrill seekers. Because here there's, among other things, the longest zipline in the world. It leads 2.83 kilometers over rugged mountain peaks and through deep valleys. Speeds of up to 150 km/h can be reached. It takes just three minutes to cover the distance through the Jebel Jais mountain region. In addition, you can camp at the highest mountain peak in the United Arab Emirates or take part in a survival course. Conceived by none other than Bear Grylls.

Destination for connoisseurs

But the emirate can do so much more! For example, it has Al Jazeera Al Hamra, the only remains of a pearl fishing village in the Gulf region. Abandoned today, it's the oldest town in the entire federation. As the only remaining fort, Dhaya Fort is also worth a visit. Manar Mall, Al Naeem Mall, RAK Mall and Al Hamra Mall are the perfect locations for shopping fans.

When it comes to culinary delights, Ras al Khaimah offers everything from authentic eateries to upscale fine dining. For example, worth a visit is the Lexington Grill & Bar at Waldorf Astoria (reopens September 30, 2023).

Sonora Camp

A dinner in the middle of the desert, at Sonora Camp Al Wadi, on the hotel's own grounds of the Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi, is also particularly atmospheric. After an appetizer, there's a refined dinner at sunset, live entertainment by fire artists, plus the sight of herds of oryx and gazelle.
