Timeless charm, a multicultural atmosphere and rich history surround every vacation in Trieste. But these are by no means all the reasons why a trip to the Adriatic coast is worthwhile. On the contrary, there's much more to the Italian city. Here are the 5 best:

Culture and art

The present, past and future meet in Trieste. The same goes for different cultures and styles. And people like to celebrate them. Numerous museums, art galleries, theaters and cultural events invite you to go on a journey of discovery. For example, until February 18, 2024, the Museo Revoltella is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the important Italian artist Antonio Ligabue. From February 22, 2024, his works will be replaced by fifty paintings by the iconic master Vincent Van Gogh. Cineastes should mark the Trieste Film Festival (January 19 to 27, 2024) in their calendars.

City of science

The coastal city is not only known for its fine arts. It has also made a name for itself in the field of science. Trieste was even named Science Capital in 2020. Numerous internationally renowned research centers can be found here. The disciplines range from marine biology to chemistry, physics, astronomy and speleology. During a vacation in Trieste, you should definitely visit the unique Grotta Gigante and the Miramare Nature Reserve.

Destination for adventure fans

When you think of Trieste, you probably think of the sea first. And rightly so. After all, you can't only enjoy wonderful swimming and water sports here, diving is also a must. At the same time, a karst plateau stretches out behind Trieste, offering alpine adventures. Climbing, mountain biking and trekking through the varied landscape, which changes from high alpine to Mediterranean within a short distance, ensures unforgettable nature experiences. Running enthusiasts are best advised to come around 5 May. This is when the Trieste Spring Run takes place.

Sun, beach and sea

"In Trieste, the sea is one side of the room," the local writer Mauro Covacich once wrote. What he is saying is that the sea plays a major role in the lives of the locals. But they don't go there on purpose, they are, so to say, always there, as it were. Just a short distance from the city center, you can enjoy a summer retreat with a touch of the 19th century in one of the bagni. Admire the sunset from one of the beach bars, enjoy freshly grilled fish and fascinating sailing trips. If you can't get enough of the ocean, head to the new maritime museum.

Culinary excellence

The many different cultures that have left their mark on the city over the centuries have also led to culinary diversity, so you can enjoy a slice of Viennese coffee house culture (including Sacher cake) in the historic cafés or local dishes in the Osmiza. The agriturismos located in the Karst offer local food and delicious wines during the warm season.
