Great Plains opens new camps in Kenya

Sustainable travel accommodation in the Maasai Mara.

23 March 2021

Leading conservation organisation Great Plains is delighted to welcome two new camps in the Maasai Mara to its lodge portfolio. Mara Toto Camp, which is perfect for families and small groups, and the renovated Mara Plains Camp, with two new exquisite suites, will offer an exceptional private safari experience in the heart of the Mara from summer onwards. Kenya's.

Mara Toto Camp

The new Mara Toto Camp is situated on the banks of the Ntiakitiak River on the border of the Massai Mara Reserve. It offers guests privacy and wonderful game viewing opportunities due to its access to the Massai Mara Reserve and the equally exciting adjacent Northern Mara Private Concession. Beverly Joubert, co-founder of Great Plains, chose a tranquil, blue-toned interior with leather and canvas accents that harmoniously blend a sense of comfort and adventure. The camp falls under the category of Great Plains' Explorer Camps. It consists of four canvas tents with spacious brass bathrooms, a communal lounge area, and indoor and outdoor restaurants. It will open its doors to guests on 25 May 2021 and is also an excellent base for keen big cat photographers with leopards, lions and other wildlife frequently passing through the camp.

Mara Plains Camp - Honeymoon Suite

Mara Plains Camp is located in the Olare Motorogi Conservation Area, two kilometres from Mara Toto. It is one of the most famous wildlife destinations in the world, with access to the more than 1,500 km2 Maasai Mara Reserve. The lodge will reopen on June 1, 2021 after a complete renovation, offering couples a brand new honeymoon suite on a small peninsula that cannot be seen. The exterior was designed by Great Plains CEO and co-founder Dereck Joubert and features large Swahili-style wooden doors that pay homage to the essence of East Africa. Beverly Joubert designed the interior within the spacious, open-plan architecture with a colonial influence: large antique brass chandeliers from the original South African Blue Train, red-tinted interiors and fine brass accessories. The suite offers elegant furnishings for one of life's most romantic journeys and at the same time comfortable atmosphere that further enhances the lush wilderness of the surroundings.

Mara Plains Camp - Jahazi Suite

Mara Plains Camp will also be introducing the Mara Plains Jahazi Suite with the re-opening: a stunning new two-bedroom private villa. It features large wooden Zanzibar doors, large mahogany teak desks - which also invite longer workation stays - and exquisite luxurious red-toned interior details. Other highlights include a private vehicle for game drives, a personal guide, your own butler and chef. This exceptional villa has been created specifically for discerning guests seeking a personal 5-star safari experience.
