Location & neighborhood

The Blue Lagoon is only a 20-minute drive from Keflavik International Airport. The thermal bath was accidentally created in 1976 from the excess water of the neighboring geothermal power plant. Silica is responsible for the milky blue of the 39-degree water, which also prevents it from seeping into the surrounding lava field. The lagoon has long been one of Iceland's main attractions and is also perfect for a stop over on the way from Europe to North America. The Retreat at Blue Lagoon opened in 2018. The surrounding area can be explored on several hiking trails, some of which are well signposted. Numerous activities such as golfing, whale watching or excursions to the capital Reykjavik can be booked as well.

Rooms & suites

The brittle environment with seemingly endless black lava fields is reflected in the interior of the total of 62 suites ranging in size from 40 to 200 square meters. Barren lava boulders have been transformed into rough walls and set wild accents in the modern concrete cube. Walls and curtains clad in wood and slate provide a pleasant warmth. Shades of grey and brown dominate and floor-to-ceiling windows open up to terraces and views of moss-covered lava fields. Guests also have a view of the fascinating nature from the free-standing bathtubs. By the way - TVs were deliberately omitted in the suites and public areas. After all, nature plays first fiddle here.

Food & Drinks

The gourmet restaurant Moss not only impresses with fantastic views of the Blue Lagoon and moss-covered lava fields - it scores points above all with what Icelandic chef Agnar (Aggi) Sverrisson conjures up on the plates in the up to seven courses of the tasting menu. These are dishes that the internationally experienced Aggi prepares from the best ingredients of his Icelandic homeland such as the wonderfully marinated herring, the gently cooked pork cheek with cranberries or salmon served smoked and marinated. There's also a menu for vegetarians and a top-notch wine pairing. With the Lava Restaurant, the retreat offers another appealing culinary address.

Wellness & Fitness

The 4,000-square-metre spa is world-class. It lies three meters deep in the volcanic soil and of course the unreal blue healing water of the lagoon is most impressive. The in-water massage is a beautiful experience. Bedded on a mat and covered with a damp cloth, you float on the geothermal sea water. You float on the lagoon while receiving an incredible massage. It's like leaving this world for 60 minutes, in a good way. There are also treatments with Icelandic essences of silica, seaweed and minerals in a cave lit by candles.

The spa visit also includes the "Blue Lagoon Ritual" - a treatment comprising of three stages, during which the body is treated with silicon oxide, minerals and algae, and which concludes with a bath in thermal sea water. Pore-deep cleansing of body and mind - an indescribably good feeling. The healing powers of the water have also been developed into a skin care range, which can be purchased for use at home.

A part of the lagoon is reserved exclusively for hotel guests. However, you can also move directly from the spa to the public area.

Ambience

Iceland's first five-star hotel impresses with its extraordinary design. Its public areas are defined by clear architectural lines such as metre-high ceilings, exposed concrete and exclusive furniture. The furnishings are timeless classics and extravagant custom-made pieces from B & B Italia, which give the hotel a feel-good ambience. 80 different shades reflect the colours of moss green, lava grey and cloud blue, dissolving the boundaries between inside and outside. When guests enter the retreat, they do not leave nature, rather they go deeper into it.
