Classic Hotel Meranerhof: Enjoy South Tyrol's "Fifth Season"

Autumn traditionally marks the beginning of "Törggelezeit" in South Tyrol, a time to enjoy the harvest and the new vintage. But that is by no means all that the spa town of Merano has to offer. The best place to experience this wonderful time of the year: The Classic Hotel Meranerhof.

September 12, 2023

On October 1, when the leaves begin changing color and all the grapes are harvested, it's time for "Törggelen" in South Tyrol. This centuries-old custom is a special time where tradition and enjoyment are paramount. The Classic Hotel Meranerhof in the gorgeous spa town of Merano is proud to uphold both for the last three generations. In addition, the Meranerhof also has a special offer for anyone wishing to join them for South Tyrol's "fifth season".

One may assume that the word "Törggelen" is derived from "torkeln" – the German word for "staggering" – and refers to excessive wine consumption. After all, "Sußer" (sweet, unfermented grape juice) and young wine ("Nuier") play a major role. However, the term comes from the Latin "torquere", which simply means "pressing wine". In addition to the latest vintage, leisurely autumn walks through vineyards, chestnut groves, picturesque villages, and leafy forests are also a big part of the "Törggelen" season. Because wherever chestnuts and wine grow, Buschen and Hofschänken (local wine taverns) open their doors, usually from early October to late November. South Tyrolean delicacies such as Schlutzkrapfen, bacon, cheese, farmhouse bread, chestnuts and Keschtn (sweet doughnuts) take center stage as the ideal accompaniment to the new wine.

The Classic Hotel Meranerhof is an ideal starting point for breathtaking autumn hikes, enjoying Törggelen and for discovering the Merano region in all its beauty. Located in the heart of the quaint spa town of Merano, the famed hotel has been family-owned since 1966, and is currently managed by the 3rd generation of strong-willed, enthusiastic ladies – and with love, which can be found in the smallest details.

Taking a time out in a traditional hotel

It's no wonder then that guests are drawn back again and again. Every autumn, the hotel hosts special Tyrolean evenings where guests are entertained by staff in typical South Tyrolean garb, regional musical performances and perhaps a glass or two from the schnapps barrel.

As the Merano region not only offers ideal conditions for wonderful autumn strolls, but is also the ideal "adventure playground" for all outdoor activities, it's good that the hotel boasts a spacious wellness oasis. Nothing stands in the way of relaxing in their Finnish sauna or their Roman steam bath, going for a swim in their indoor pool, or working out in the fitness room.

Delights for gourmets

As for culinary delights, chef Arno Fritz combines the best of South Tyrol with light, Mediterranean fare. He and his team use the best regional ingredients, prepared with skill and refinement. The noble ambiance emphasizes the magic on your plate, and the Meranerhof's warm service is already the stuff of legends.

The best way to end the evening is with a drink at the charming house bar, which is decorated in the elegant Art Nouveau style the Meranerhof is famed for and has served famous patrons like Michael Jackson, Louis Trenker and Arved Fuchs.
