There is certainly no shortage of exclusive boutique hotels in London. However, few manage the balancing act between luxury, design and comfort as brilliantly as At Sloane, which opened in September 2023. Located in the posh, trendy Chelsea district on Sloane Square, it is in the heart of London, not far from King's Road, Harrod's and many galleries and boutiques. If you want to go a little further afield, there is also a Tube station on the doorstep.

Arts and Crafts Chic

At Sloane itself is located in a Victorian townhouse (built in 1888), which was meticulously renovated over six years. The interior was completely rebuilt, while the historic façade was left intact. One new addition, however, is a sixth floor with a cupola, where a restaurant offers a fantastic panoramic view of the neighborhood.

The interiors bear the signature of acclaimed architect François-Joseph Graf, who, in close collaboration with the Cadogan Estates and hotelier Jean-Louis Costes (known for the Hotel Costes near Place Vendôme in Paris), has created an impressive homage to the Arts and Crafts design movement. The 30 rooms and suites are bear unique interiors – furnished partly with restored original pieces, and partly replicas – with lovely details from the fin-de-siécle period such as wallpaper and mirrors by William Morris, Benson lamps, wood-paneled walls, mosaics, neo-Greek friezes, countless vases, and furniture by Edward William Godwin, Josef Hoffman and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. In total, Graf and his team created 21 carpet, 19 curtain and 50 textile designs specifically for At Sloane, ensuring that each and every room is truly one-of-a-kind. In addition, small, playful details bring the hotel into the 21st century, such as black and white photos by Helmut Newton and a "Love" setting in the rooms that dims the light on command.

From panoramas to speakeasys

The restaurant on the 6th floor is also characterized by the style of the turn of the century. Inspired by the legendary "Peacock Room" by Thomas Jeckyll and James Whistler (originally in nearby Kensington, now in the Smithsonian Gallery), Graf has created a space full of light and mirrors with a breathtaking view. Over 500 vases line the walls and, as an added bonus, private dinners can be enjoyed in the elegant octagonal space under the cupola. Like the Hotel Costes, the menu offers international classics with a French twist, such as pommes allumettes, pasta with spicy lobster, as well as dim sum and eggplant with burrata.

Meanwhile, a speakeasy bar awaits in the basement, complete with its own side entrance on Holbein Place. This is where François-Joseph Graf's Parisian flair really comes into its own, with brownish-red velvet seats, subdued lighting and lots of hidden corners. An impressive list of French wines and trendy cocktails such as Dirty Tonics make for a perfect evening, with an in-house DJ providing the necessary soundtrack.
