Finally USA again: Here it is most beautiful in autumn and winter

For a long time, entry into the United States was not possible. Now that the borders are open again, we are especially looking forward to these destinations.

5 November 2021

Christmas shopping trip, winter wonderland or would you rather soak up the sun in the south? Whoever wanted to travel to the USA had to put his travel plans aside for a long time. On November 8, the country will reopen its borders under certain conditions, finally offering the opportunity to discover the multitude of national parks, vibrant cities and world-famous sights in person.

Experience New York Christmas

Hardly any other city is as popular in the run-up to Christmas as the Big Apple. While Times Square, Broadway or Central Park are impressive enough during a trip to New York, this effect is amplified many times over during Advent. Thousands and thousands of glowing and glittering shop windows adorn the streets and entire building facades are decorated with Christmas decorations and offer a great atmosphere for sightseeing and Christmas shopping. A special highlight besides the numerous attractions and classics such as a visit to the observation deck on the Empire State Building or the Statue of Liberty is certainly a carriage ride through the snow-covered Central Park or ice skating at Rockefeller Center with a view of the large, magnificently decorated Christmas tree.

Skiing in Aspen or New England

If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the big city and favor a ski vacation with a difference, consider the ski capital of the East: New England. Around 500 kilometres from New York, winter sports fans will find 116 slopes here, including four dark black double-diamond runs, on an area that spans two large mountains. Those who crave perfect powder should plan a ski vacation in Aspen. It's not for nothing that the snow here in Colorado is called "Champagne Powder": the dry climate in the Rocky Mountains ensures that the snow is particularly fine and light. In Aspen, four mountains above the 3,000-meter mark and a winter sports area of 22 square kilometers await vacationers.

Enjoy the tranquility of nature in the National Park

When the snow-covered wilderness sinks into silence and solitude, the national parks of the USA unfold their full potential: especially in the cold season, the chances of seeing bison, moose or even bears and wolves on a snowshoe hike or a cross-country ski tour increase. But that's not the only reason why a visit outside the high season is recommended. While in summer visitors to Yellowstone National Park, the oldest and most famous national park in the USA, crowd in front of a collection of mountains, rivers, canyons and steaming springs and geysers, in winter there is much less going on here. But other national parks like Grand Teton National Park, Bryce Canyon or Rocky Mountain National Park are also open all year round and definitely worth a visit.

Swap cold winter weather for sun, beach and sea

Even in autumn and winter, there are destinations in the USA where you can escape the cold temperatures in this country. Florida in the southeast of the country is ideal as a winter destination. The sultry heat and mosquitoes are over with the summer and holidaymakers can still expect bright sunshine on the approximately 2,000 kilometres of coastline. Whether exploring the incomparable landscapes of the Everglades, golfing in Palm Beach or swimming with manatees in the Crystal River - Florida has something to offer for every taste. Holidaymakers will find a touch of the South Seas in Hawaii, which offers a great contrast to the Austrian winter with its flower cenotes, surfers, volcanoes, rainforests and waterfalls. Due to the Polynesian culture, Hawaii is especially popular for tourists who are not big fans of the American way of life.
