This Is Why Puglia Is the Insider Tip of the Summer

You almost think you are taking a trip back in time in the deep south of Italy, between the country's longest coastline and picturesque towns.

Until a few years ago, sunny Puglia in the deep south of Italy was still an absolute insider's tip. Those who knew it appreciated the region for its olive oil, its down-to-earth yet excellent cuisine and the longest coastline in the country. Those who regularly spent their summers here did so far from luxurious hotels, glamorous bars and Michelin award-winning restaurants. But increasingly, the heel and toe of the boot is becoming a hotspot for those who still want to experience Italy in an authentic way. And although Puglia is very different from the rest of the country in many ways (design, high culture and fashion are not priorities here, for example), the area perfectly embodies the essence of the Italian lifestyle.

The arrival of unique luxury hotels has in no way damaged the reputation of secret tip Puglia. On the contrary, the peak hotels of Puglia are now among the best in the entire country. Indeed, their approach to the hotel industry is anything but the usual knitting of five-star beach resorts. To this day, for example, the local architecture of whitewashed houses and cottages is preserved. But if you think there are only beaches and olive groves here, you're sorely mistaken: exciting cities, from lively Bari to idyllic Ostuni to baroque Lecce, are just waiting to be discovered.

Culinary-wise, the region is vegetable-heavy - with simple recipes that long back to the area's relatively poor past but unleash incomparable flavors. Wine connoisseurs will also appreciate the diversity, which goes far beyond Primitivo, Negroamaro and Sangiovese.
