Framed by the Mayacamas Mountains to the north, the Vaca Mountains to the east, and San Pablo Bay to the south, 80 kilometers north of San Francisco lies one of the best winegrowing valleys in the world. Its microclimate allows world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Chardonnay grapes to thrive with the power of the California sun.

When European immigrants began settling the fertile region of northern California in the 19th century and growing wine for their own consumption, they probably had no idea that around 100 years later Napa Valley would produce wines that rank among the best in the world. Although the area is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon, it also has ideal climate conditions for Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, as well as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. In total, more than 40 grape varieties are cultivated here.

With an area of just 400 square kilometers, the valley is comparatively small in geographical terms, but when it comes to tourism it is one of the hotspots on the West Coast. With 4.7 million overnight visitors per year, it is the second most popular tourist attraction in the state - just behind Disneyland. There is a lot that goes into the success of the adult version of an amusement park.

When the current owner acquired the Meadowood Resort in 1979, it quickly became the meeting place for local wine growers. Today, it is one of the most luxurious resorts in the area. Wine enthusiasts learn all about grapes in liquid and solid form at the wine center, while those seeking tranquility spend time at the award-winning spa. Construction is underway to rebuild the restaurant after a devastating fire in 2020. The new "Forum" is set to spoil guests with creations that primarily use produce from the hotel's own garden.

Most of the nearly 480 wineries, 92 percent of which are family-owned, invite visitors to wine tastings and experiences in and around the vineyard and the grape. Throughout the year, people pay homage to the fine wines at numerous festivals, such as Bottle Rock, which attracts up to 100,000 visitors a year. In addition, the Napa Valley Wine Train tours the region almost daily - its passengers admire the passing rows of vines while enjoying local products on board the restored luxury train.

And because wine and good food simply go hand in hand, it is not surprising that the region's charming little towns are home to numerous excellent restaurants, including some highly decorated ones.
