Tour Tip: From Aschau to the Gedererwand

One route that is particularly well suited for a so-called "e-bike and hike" goes from Aschau to the Gedererwand, a rugged peak with steep drop-offs that precedes the famous Kampenwand and offers a breathtaking panorama of the so-called "Bavarian sea" - the picturesque Chiemsee. It starts at Aschau campground, a new, fully automated RV and camping site at the foot of the Kampenwand, surrounded by pastures and mountain scenery in the gorgeous Bavarian village of Aschau im Chiemgau. Start with plenty of supplemental power from a Victoria e-bike and take the trail through the Bärnsee marsh and onward, up to the Seiser Alm and Vordergschwendt, continuing to Hintergschwendt.

This little village was touched by a bit of Bavarian history a little more than 100 years ago: Three Bavarian royals, the princesses Hildegard, Wiltrud and Gundelinde, sought and found a safe refuge here a few days after the end of the Bavarian monarchy in early November 1918.

The trail winds its way upward from here, with a gentle ascent towards the Kampenwand. Leave the busy route at the next crossroads and follow the signs to the left toward Gedererwand. With the aid of electrical assistance, you'll reach the end of the forest road after about an hour, where you can lock your Victoria e-bike right below the small chapel colloquially known as "Brotzeit-Mare". Following the well-trodden but stony path, you'll head further up on foot, reaching a small mountain saddle after about half an hour; among grazing calves, enjoy a short break with a fantastic view.

After a little refreshment, follow the signs on the left, which reveal that the top of the Gedererwand is only 45 minutes away. As you hike along the rugged ridge with the summit firmly in view, you'll enjoy breathtaking vistas of the hills below and Lake Chiemsee until you reach your destination at 1398 meters above sea level. After another break to take in the view, it's time for the descent to the Maisalm. This rustic alpine pasture on the northwest foothills of the Kampenwand entices with classic alpine snacks and freshly-baked Kaiserschmarrn.

Refreshed and proud to have reached the summit, ride safely downhill back to Aschau on your Victoria e-bike, thanks to the finely adjustable and stable Magura brakes. Finally, take a dip in the natural swimming pool right next to the campsite: Resembling a small mountain lake, it's located on the outskirts of the village; admission is completely free. Summer in the mountains can be this beautiful!
