Borgo 69: A Sustainable New Property in Tuscany

When a London-based architect and film designer and an Italian financial expert team up to open their own hotel in Tuscany, the outcome is truly special. This is the newly opened Borgo 69.

October 16, 2022

It's their shared passion and fascination for luxury tourism that initially united Philip Robinson and Paolo Kastelec. The London-based architect and film designer (Four Weddings and a Funeral) and the Italian financial expert both dreamed of owning their own hotel in Tuscany for years. With the opening of Borgo 69, they finally made their dream a reality.

A hotel recycled

They found the best conditions for their vision in the Tuscan countryside between the wine regions of Chianti, Montalcino and Montepulciano. They turned a majestic 19th-century villa into the Fontelunga, a boutique hotel with nine guest rooms. They also created Villa Gallo and Villa Galletto, two apartment villas for discerning self-sufficient guests.

Robinson was responsible for the design at Borgo 69. The old components of the 200-year-old building were carefully dismantled. They expertly recycled or repurposed the bricks. The custom-made furniture in contemporary Tuscan style was sourced from local companies. The interior design – characterized by high-quality natural materials, stone, earthenware and linen – was created by art director Lynne Huitson.

Construction time: four years

Robinson and Kastelec began their project in 2018, followed by four years of development, design and construction work. The result is truly remarkable. No detail was left to chance. The rustic, warm and authentic style of the property reflects the character of the hosts.

A total of 12 individually designed and luxurious villa suites are now available. They are complemented by an infinity pool, an indoor and outdoor wellness area, as well as an extensive garden with its own cultivation and a 200-year-old olive grove. The Valdichiana Outlet Center, an Eldorado for shopping fans, is just ten minutes away. The beautiful nature of the surrounding area is perfect for hikes and outdoor workouts.

Homage to mom

The hosts are particularly proud of their deli restaurant Emporio di Ines, named after Kastelec's mother. Carlo Porcu's excellent Italian cuisine will delight even the most discerning palates. Chicchetti (Italian tapas) are on the menu twice a week. You also buy fresh produce from Borgo 69's own cultivation as well as the region – all organic, of course. Olive oil, cheese, meat, wines and the like are all sourced within a radius of less than 50 kilometers.

The property's concierge can help book unforgettable experiences. In addition to wine tastings, truffle hunting excursions, hot air balloon rides, and a visit to the falconry, guests can also embark on vintage car tours through the vineyards. The hotel will be open over Christmas until January 6, 2023, after which it will take a short break before opening for the new season on March 21, 2023.
