Many stories and legends surround the Hotel Danieli in Venice. Now the oldest hotel in the lagoon city is changing hands.

January 7, 2022

When one thinks of Venice, images of imposing palazzos lining the lagoon city inevitably come to mind. One of them can be seen on almost every Venice postcard: Palazzo Dandolo. Better known as the Hotel Danieli, the magnificent 14th-century building on the Grand Canal. High-profile guests have been coming and going here for more than 200 years. Among them were greats such as Goethe, Charles Dickens, Marcel Proust and Lord Byron. In its history, the noble hotel has changed hands several times. Most recently, it was owned by the Statuto Group, which acquired it from Starwood Hotels & Resorts for a reported 177 million euros. As has now been announced, Four Seasons is taking over the prestigious property. The opening is planned for 2024.

Danieli goes Four Seasons

The luxury hotel brand The Four Seasons, which is largely owned by Bill Gates, is reportedly putting 30 million euros into renovating the historic house. When it opens in 2024, it will have 200 rooms and suites. The company entrusted the design to renowned French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon. He has already been responsible for numerous hotel designs. His most recent projects include the San Domenico Palace, Taormina and The Woodward in Geneva .

Luxury for 200 years

The hotel palace is one of the most famous landmarks of the lagoon city. The lobby, Gothic in style, has always been a magnet for curious tourists, for the building from the 14th century almost looks like a museum. The impressive hotel hall is characterized by magnificent marble and woodwork. And an ancient flight of steps leads to the top, astonishing the visitor. Pierre-Yves Rochon already proved that he would handle it with care during the last renovation. Even then, the designs for the four large historic suites came from him. And the location right next to the Doge's Palace? Just as unique. Just like the view from the roof terrace over the entire lagoon city.
