This Architectural Gem Is a New Highlight for Skiers

Visitors are in for a treat at the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area: a new lift including an observation tower will be inaugurated this December.

November 9, 2022

The newly built lift at Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau will take winter sports enthusiasts to the highest point in the entire ski area in under four minutes. It replaces the Hornlift 2000, which was in service for 23 years. The new architectural masterpiece is not only faster, but also more comfortable and offers a better view.

To the top

Visitors float to the summit on 6-seater chairs, regardless of wind and weather. The chairs are equipped with weather protection hoods and heated seats. A new, easy slope also allows beginners to use the newly built lift as well. On the summit, avid skiers will feel like the kings of the world at the "Top of Alpbachtal."

That's the name that was chosen for the new mountain station with its 13-meter-high observation tower. Inside, it offers breathtaking views through panoramic windows. Those who want to get even closer can go to the viewing platform, where guests can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. This impressive and modern structure was designed by the Snøhetta architecture studio, which has a branch office in Innsbruck.

Thoughtful masterpiece

The tower blends beautifully into the landscape. It's made of wood and covered with handmade shingles, reflecting the tradition of the Alpbach Valley. Inside, a seating landscape awaits visitors, whose design reinterprets the typical Tyrolean parlor. Naturally, the construction adhered to standards of sustainability.

The room is protected from the wind, but there's no heating. In addition, the lift is equipped with state-of-the-art technology. "It has a direct drive that saves up to 10 percent in energy," explains Reinhard Wieser, managing director of Alpbachtaler Bergbahnen. The structural implementation was carried out by local companies. From December 3, winter sports lovers can enjoy the new mountain lift including the "Top of Alpbachtal" viewing tower.

Reason to celebrate

But the new lift system and the observation tower are by no means all that winter sports enthusiasts can look forward to in the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal ski region, one of the largest ski areas in Tyrol. It was created by merging the two regions of Alpbachtal and Wildschönau. This merger is now already celebrating its 10th anniversary. The ski area is particularly popular with families. Six ski schools and around 150 certified ski instructors and child-friendly lifts allow even the youngest to partake in the joyous winter sport.

The new Schatzberg Zwergenland adventure park at the halfway station with several magic carpets, a ski carousel, a winter playground and an igloo provides lots of fun for the little ones. Adults, on the other hand, will be delighted with a special promotion in spring 2023. From March 18 to April 16, all children born after 2006 will ski for free (provided that a parent purchases a 3-day ski pass). The Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau region also scores in terms of accessibility. It's only 90 minutes by car from Munich and only 70 kilometers from Innsbruck Airport.
