As temperatures slowly rise and spring cautiously peeks through, the weekend offers the perfect opportunity to escape the big city hustle and bustle for a bit. From Vienna there are numerous impressive Excursion destinations, which are great for switching off, exploring new areas and being active.

Here are five destinations that you can comfortably reach from Vienna.

Lainz Zoo

The recreation area on the outskirts of Vienna has a lot to offer. Because the Lainz Zoo convinces with a last piece of the original Vienna Woods. The dreamlike natural landscape, the fascinating animal world and the cultural diversity of the exhibitions in the Hermesvilla can be discovered. The entire area covers 2,450 hectares, of which 1,945 hectares are forest area. A perfect place to relax.

Liechtenstein Castle

Not far from Vienna stretches a true insider tip for fans of hiking and old castles. Because on the edge of the Vienna Woods, on the border between Maria Enzersdorf and Mödling, stands the very well preserved Liechtenstein Castle. From the old town of Mödling you can take an enjoyable hike through the forest to reach the castle. The history of the old walls goes back to the year 1130. In the 19th century, the imposing castle was completely renovated and still shines in splendour today. Visitors can walk around the castle, enjoy the fabulous view or book a guided tour through the historic rooms, which have now been converted into a museum.

Dürnstein

Hotspot Dürnstein there is everything a city dweller in need of recreation needs: beautiful natural landscapes, a dreamlike cycle path directly on the Danube, romantic villages lined with medieval rows of houses and dreamy details from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. A special highlight is a visit to the ruins of Dürnstein, in whose dungeon King Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned. From the centre of Dürnstein it takes about 20 minutes to climb the small mountain from which the ruin shines. You will be rewarded with a spectacular panoramic view.

Laxenburg Castle

The Palace Park in Laxenburg is one of the most popular excursion destinations for the people of Vienna and Lower Austria. The exceedingly romantic English landscape garden is perfect for taking a long walk, playing sports and spending a day by the water. If you want to see the dreamy area from a different angle, you can take a boat out on the tree-lined castle pond. The special thing about Schloss Laxenburg, however, is the small island in the middle of the pond, on which a moated castle extends.

Lake Neusiedl

The region of Neusiedl am See impresses with about 300 sunny days a year and is always worth a visit. Especially in spring, when nature begins to blossom and you can enjoy the sun in its full glory, a trip to the Lake Neusiedl in the best way. Whether a walk, a bike ride or just some sunbathing; here everyone will find the right activity to relax. By the way, in particularly good weather, you can see all the way over to Hungary from the lake.
