Traveling Against the Flow: Where to Relax Away from the Crowds in the Low Season

The urge to travel is higher than ever before; hardly anyone is not planning to go on vacation in 2024. Those who long for popular destinations, but prefer peace and quiet, are therefore best off vacationing in the low season.

January: Venice/Italy

During the summer months, the narrow streets of the city center are often very crowded. The period around the film festival at the end of August and beginning of September is one of the peak times. As is February, when the traditional Carnival in Venice takes place. So why not travel to the lagoon city in January? Then, the temperatures range between 0 and 7 °C, it hardly rains and you have many streets all to yourself.

February: Budapest/Hungary

Budapest is neither known as a typical city for Valentine's Day romance nor as a tip for carnival fans. Perfect for a break in February. Simply dress warmly, see the gorgeous Fishermen's Bastion or the Parliament sparkling in the winter sun and then head to one of the opulent coffee houses to warm up!

March: Mallorca/Spain

Of course, late spring is a popular time on Mallorca because you can already swim in the sea and sit outside in short sleeves. The European midsummer is very busy, and cycling enthusiasts come in the fall. The end of January and February are also becoming increasingly popular: after all, it's almond blossom. That leaves March as the logical choice. Spring is already underway and you'll catch a few glimpses of the delicate pink almond blossoms. Vacations in the off-season can be so magical!

April: Cape Town/South Africa

As in many other parts of the world, the weather in April simply does what it wants. In other words, it can be changeable. It can be 27 °C during the day and then 16 °C again. However, the summer heat is certainly on its way out. Autumn is slowly setting in, which makes the Garden Route shine in a special light. And the waves show surfers their most impressive side!

May: Maldives

When it's already warm and cozy in Europe, many people don't necessarily think about long-distance travel. That in itself would be an argument for the Maldives in May. What's more, May to October is actually the rainy season in the island state. Theoretically at least, because in reality it only rains for about half an hour a day.

June: Albania

The country on the coast of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas is still an insider tip. This is due to the long political instability. But Albania has everything you need for a fantastic summer vacation. In addition to the coast and sea, there are archaeological sites, national parks and numerous museums.

July: Queensland/Australia

July is the coldest month on the Gold Coast and therefore the absolute low season. However, this is also when it rains the least. And the temperatures still reach around 26 °C during the day, with the water being around 24 °C. The Australian winter is therefore well worth a vacation in the low season.

August: Sal/Cape Verde

The Cape Verde Islands are still more of a secret tip anyway. But word is slowly getting around: You can have a wonderful beach vacation here - all year round. Most guests still come in the European winter due to the better flight connections. But those who like to have a lot of beach to themselves can enjoy a relaxing dream vacation in Cape Verde in August.

September: Seychelles

The tropical island paradise is a typical getaway destination to escape the European winter. Summer temperatures between 26 and 32 °C prevail here all year round. In September, there are fewer guests as well as fewer rainy days and some wind. So, surfing is definitely possible. And then, hiking is also more pleasant.

October: Lapland/Finland

The official home of Santa Claus is of course particularly popular in November and December. But you can actually visit the Santa Claus village Rovaniemi all year round. Although the temperatures no longer reach the summery highs of 20 °C, they do not yet reach the wintery lows of -8 °C either. There's enough snow for numerous outdoor adventures, such as a husky sledge ride.

November: Cuba

The official dry season does not begin until mid-November, but as soon as the hurricane season (July to October) is over, it becomes increasingly dry again. The climate is still pleasantly warm, not hot. This means that nothing stands in the way of sunny days on the beach, Caribbean vacation flair and exciting island explorations - not even group travelers from Europe or the USA.

December: Dubrovnik/Croatia

If you want to have the city to yourself - or at least don't want to share it with many others - it's best to come in December. Thanks to its very southerly location, December in Dubrovnik is not very cold. At 15 degrees, you can still enjoy your coffee outside in the sun. There are also Christmas markets here.
